Mechanical Engineering intern

Brook Engineering Pty Ltd

Design and manufacture of bespoke machinery, equipment and parts

Brook Engineering is a small (growing) reputable South Australian firm, establishment in 1991, specialising in the design, manufacture and assembly of prototype and special purpose equipment, plastic injection moulds, low volume CNC and manual production of components. We work in a friendly, collaborative and very customer-focused manner. We strive to achieve a high-level of quality and earn repeat business from our growing customer base. We are continually seeking to improve our methods and equipment, expand our capabilities and adopt new technologies (e.g. growing opportunities to apply additive manufacturing technologies).

The opportunity:

We would be pleased to host a mechanical engineering or mechatronics intern for a semester. In the role, you will gain knowledge and experience as a welcomed member of a collaborative design and manufacturing team. In particular, you will learn from our experienced engineering manager about developing designs of machinery and parts, as well as learning about best practice in CAD modelling and drawing preparation for customer review and manufacture. You will also have opportunities to experience and assist with our management of projects through various stages from inception and design through to completion of manufacture, gaining understanding of various manufacturing processes. In collaborating with our CNC machinists and toolmakers, you will get hands on experience of various raw materials being machined to finished parts and assembled in special purpose machinery.

This internship will be available to eligible students from April 2025 and could apply for a period of 5-6 months from starting.

Attendance may be part-time or full-time but a regular routine averaging at least 3 days per week is expected. Suitable hours would be 8am to 4pm, although there will be some flexibility on the start/finish times. Interns who successfully complete their internship will be considered favourably for employment with Brook Engineering at that time on a casual, part-time or full-time basis. The preferred candidate should:

  • Be a 4th year/Honours student in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics
  • Have strong interest in mechanical design of special purpose (bespoke) machinery and parts.
  • Be inclined to be meticulous and attentive to detail.
  • Have an outgoing personality, happy to engage with customers and collaborate in a team.
  • Be interested in a career with a small specialised engineering (design and manufacturing) firm servicing a wide range of South Australian industries.
  • Any experience in 3D printing would be a bonus as that is a new capability we are keen to develop in-house.
